ABSTRACT

Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida, is located south of downtown Jacksonville on the banks of the Saint Johns River, which at this point varies between two to three miles in width, more like a lake than a river. The river flows slowly from south to north, unusual for rivers in the United States, which generally move, like the Mississippi, from north to south, and it is slow moving because it drops only about thirty feet from its source to its emptying into the Atlantic at Jacksonville. At the mouth and for some distance upriver, it alternates direction because of the tidal flows.
