ABSTRACT

In this chapter we examine the relationship teachers have with ICT. We argue that because teachers are the prime users of technology, there is a clear opportunity for them to devise ways in which the potential benefits of ICT can be exploited. However, as we shall discover, the road to harnessing technology effectively in the classroom can be far from smooth, and the relationship between teachers and technology is often tentative or unproductive. In this chapter, therefore, you will:

• gain an understanding of some of the arguments behind teachers’ relationships with new technology;

• be given an opportunity to explore these arguments in a case study; • appreciate why some of the challenges and barriers have emerged.
