ABSTRACT

The next three chapters concern the role of reflection in the professions. In this context, the term has been seen as an important element in appropriate professional practice and much of this work has been inspired by Donald Schöns book, The Reflective Practitioner (1983). In pursuing the role of reflection in this field of professional practice, this chapter considers Schön's work directly. It takes a critical overview of his constructs because they have been so influential on other work. The following two chapters take a wider view of reflective practice – first, from a theoretical standpoint, then from a more practical and applied standpoint.
