ABSTRACT

On a Monday in late March or April, 1946, Margaret Bourke-White visited Gandhi for the first time.1 Forty-one-year-old Bourke-White had already established herself as a world-renowned photographer: as the first female photojournalist hired by Life magazine, her work had appeared on the cover of the publication several times, including its inaugural issue in 1936. Life sent her to India in 1946 to cover the events unfolding there in the run up to independence. She began by seeking out Gandhi.
