ABSTRACT

Once the symptomatic or at-risk sport participant has been identified, several management decisions must be made regarding how best to communicate with the individual, as well as how to arrange for the necessary evaluation and possible treatment. However, before going further, we should describe what we mean by management, and explain why sport personnel should be involved. We make a distinction between management and treatment. Management is broader than treatment and refers to a process that begins with identification of an at-risk individual and continues through the individual’s treatment and aftercare (Thompson & Sherman, 1993a).
