ABSTRACT

Eating disorders are common conditions that are increasing in prevalence worldwide (Hay, Mond, Buttner, & Darby, 2008) and are beginning to affect a range of people at various ages (Mangweth-Matzek et al., 2006). At the same time, participation in sports is becoming much more popular (Mond, Myers, Crosby, Hay, & Mitchell, 2008). These two sets of events commonly intersect, and many sports participants are affected by eating disorders. Although there is disagreement as to whether or not participation in sport itself increases the risk for an eating disorder or whether an individual with an eating disorder is more likely to participate in sport, co-occurrence is common.
