ABSTRACT

This chapter describes potential diagnostic benefits of the Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders-text revision (DSM-IV-TR) and also describes the benefits of using the DSM-IV-TR Multiaxial Assessment System. It defines dual diagnosis and identifies common Axis I substance-related disorders. The chapter explains the differences between substance dependence and substance abuse and discusses the criteria necessary for substance intoxication. It examines the frequently occurring comorbid Axis II personality disorders and also explains the use and structure of the Global Assessment of Functioning Scale. The chapter also provides general information regarding the Global Assessment of Functi oning Scale and its use with addicted persons. The DSM-IV-TR's multiaxial system insures that counselors minimally assess clients according to several domain areas. Addictions counselors most often use the term dual diagnosis when clients present with comorbid Axis I substance-related and other mental health disorders.
