ABSTRACT

This chapter describes Tier Four of the four-tiered Clinical Interviews, Standardized Speciality, Drug Detection, and Personality Assessment (CLISD-PA) model and explains why the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent are used by addictions counselors. It also describes the instruments' basic validity, clinical, and supplementary scales and shows that how to provide therapeutic feedback based on the CLISD-PA model experience. CLISD-PA model uses a standardized personality assessment instrument such as the MMPI-2 to provide an expansive image of the client's personality and commonly corresponding personality traits and behaviors. The MMPI-2 Validity Scales are akin to the steam engine that pulls the train. The counselor validates the client's perception that the MMPI-2 suggests the client has both alcohol and drug addictions. However, instead of diffusing the therapeutic potential of the feedback by discussing both addictions concomitantly, the counselor initially limits the discussion to alcohol.
