ABSTRACT

At the beginning of September 2004, Carillion won a new design and build project worth £77 million for 2000 new student places and a new sports hall on the University of West England (UWE) Frenchay Campus due to start on site in December 2004. It was due to get planning permission in October 2004, but this was only granted with major design changes. Carillion were responsible for incorporating these design changes, keeping to the original start date and completing the building by the end of July 2006. These presented interesting challenges for design and construction management. The project was to use a system of prefabricated concrete floor and wall units together with toilet pods in order to meet the client’s requirements for robustness and quality and to cut down the build time to 20 months. The building was going on beside the Faculty of Built Environment (FBE) and had potential for becoming a learning resource for a range of planning, construction and property students.
