ABSTRACT

The world of education is constantly evolving, and many teachers no longer choose to spend their entire working lives based in a school or college. While your training and expertise will stand you in good stead for any workplace, a change of job does not have to mean the end of your career as an educationalist. As we set out to demonstrate in this book, there are numerous jobs that will take you away from a traditional school or college-based role but keep you within the field of education and enable you to make direct use of your skills and experience:

Chapter content

The book is divided into six chapters. Each chapter focuses on a different set of skills and competencies, and explores a range of associated jobs:

• Chapter 1 covers jobs that make particular use of your generic teaching skills. Some of the jobs are voluntary or part time, others can be developed into a full-time career with the potential to provide a good income. The chapter begins with a survey of generic teaching skills and how they fit into the wider field of education. Although this survey will probably not tell you anything you do not already know, it can be useful to set down on paper just how many skills you possess – particularly when it comes to compiling a skills-based CV (see page 229) or writing letters of application.
