ABSTRACT
In this chapter we set out the basic structure of the current biomedical paradigm. This paradigm's indebtedness to Bernard will be quickly apparent. We do not claim to provide a comprehensive accounting of all its variations. We do, however, capture its central features. Then, in Chapters 9-12, we discuss refinements and modifications to the basic paradigm.
