ABSTRACT
How are the mind and body related? This first approximation to a formulation of the mind-body problem will not do, both because it is too vague and because it does not express a problem but only a question. Consider the question, ‘How is France related to Germany?’ This question will call up at best a catalogue of official guidebook facts, unless there is some reason to suppose that there is a particular problem about the relationship between France and Germany, say a problem about trade or territory.
