ABSTRACT
After the Great Famine and the collapse of the Repeal and Young Ireland movements, there was a short period in which British politicians in London could resort to their favourite Irish policy: masterly inactivity. But the government was to be jolted out of its imperial complacency by the violent actions of a new breed of Irish nationalists: the Fenians.
