ABSTRACT

This chapter considers a number of issues concerning negotiating a solution with a client. It offers a Single-Session Therapy (SST)-based definition of a solution and distinguishes between a chosen solution and a potential solution before discussing what insights working alliance theory have to offer the process of negotiating a solution. The concept of the working alliance can inform the SST therapist as they work with a client to select a solution. There are several types of solutions that the client can implement in SST. The selected solution should best meet the client’s current situation. A cognitive solution involves the client changing some aspect of their thinking about salient aspects of the problem. There are a number of different types of cognitive solution. The chapter concludes by outlining some of the main types of solution clients can be helped to choose and implement.
