ABSTRACT

Dispositional Compatibilism is a view that builds upon some of the elements of the Conditional Analysis. The dispositional compatibilist develops the theory in important new ways in order to avoid various shortcomings of previous views. The dispositional compatibilist is not ready to give up the plausible Principle of Alternative Possibilities and returns to the idea that being able to do otherwise can be understood in a way that is perfectly consistent with determinism. While classical compatibilist views focus on external impediments to action, more recent theories focus on internal obstacles and how these relate to choice and action. Some such theories are referred to as mesh theories because they claim that freedom consists in an appropriate mesh between various elements of an action and the agent’s inner states.
