ABSTRACT

Privacy is a basic human right protected under the UK Human Rights Act, the European Convention on Human Rights and the UN Declaration of Human Rights that allows people the right to respect for their private and family life, home and correspondence. This means that no one should interfere with or intrude on another’s privacy without good reason. A privacy invasion can come from the state, a corporate body or the media and none is more welcome than another if the contact is seen as an invasion of privacy. It should be remembered that privacy is a complex matter of personal control and so the levels vary from person to person. Health, home and personal correspondence are central elements to the right of privacy. L. J. Leveson identified these as the keys to the personal autonomy that makes sense of the need for privacy.
