ABSTRACT

While the Republican Party was being organized to keep Dr. Khan Sahib in power in West Pakistan, fresh trouble was brewing in East Pakistan. According to a premediatated plan, the opposition raised the objection that insufficient time was permitted for debate and that this curtailed the rights of the assembly. The speaker upheld the objection and when Sarkar rose to present the budget, the speaker denied him permission to do so and adjourned the assembly sinedie. The governor's rule was lifted on June 1, 1956, and the ministry was restored to office. The Awami League protested strongly that this was irregular and demanded that the assembly be convened. Ataur Rahman Khan is from Dhaka District and practiced law in that district. He joined the Awami League at its inception in 1949 and acted as provincial president during the jail terms of Maulana Bhashani.
