ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates new directions for the application of channel mapping and simulation modeling as techniques for policy planning. It discusses a new perspective on policy planning, and illustrates how the planning techniques that have presented could be used advantageously as a framework for the reintegration of social process study and planning. The distinction between micro and macro research provides a comparative framework for simulation modeling and channel mapping. The descriptive research of channel mapping operates on several micro levels within the community. Channel mapping is a relatively quick and inexpensive technique that can provide a sound information base. In providing a thorough description of the channel participants and mechanisms, channel mapping research suggests strategies for enhancement of channel performance. The integration of channel mapping and DIOSIM modeling strengthens both techniques. Together channel mapping and DIOSIM modeling provide a comprehensive approach to facilitate the planning process.
