ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 portrays an expanded appreciation of the relationship between self-talk and emotions. The feeling part of emotion is fully defined. The thinking part of emotion is detailed in the context of the Before Self-talk that initiates the emotional experience. Counselors and educators are invited to employ teen-friendly terms like Garbage Self-talk to convey the impact of thinking on emotions. After Self-talk, positive, consciously chosen self-talk, is designated a tool for building lifelong emotional regulation. Mental rehearsal and humor are described as useful emotion management tools. Developing a solid emotional quotient (EQ) is clarified as the goal for teens of all exceptionalities. Three activities end the chapter along with the activity sheet, My Garbage Thinking.
