ABSTRACT

The sources of anger are explored in Chapter 7 in the framework of the adolescent developmental task of community. Building a belonging place in multi-layered community groups stimulates both fear and anger. The intersecting relationship between the two teen tasks, individuation and community, is assessed. Counselors and educators are encouraged to focus on emotions instead of the traditional emphasis on peer pressure. The woundedness of failing to find a belonging place is avoided when educators structure meaningful choices in the Give a Choice technique. Threats to self, to ego, and to fairness are examined as critical sources of teen anger to be remediated in anger management plans. Teen beliefs about unfairness are addressed from a wider societal perspective. Four activities are presented. The activity sheet is the second part of the Format of an Anger Management Plan.
