ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the current interest of regional museums in the Cuban provinces of Artemisa and Pinar del Río and the Cuban Institute of Flora and Fauna to use the tangible remains at the two former Soviet nuclear missile bases of El Cacho and Santa Cruz de los Pinos as open-air museums and as peace monuments. They seek to use these materials for the purposes of education, tourism and local sustainable development. The regional museum in San Cristóbal (Artemisa) has already included the crisis in its exhibitions, placed information boards at the most notable structures at the former base at Santa Cruz de los Pinos and organized local farmers to protect the material remains and to guide visitors. In this manner the remains at this former base are being used as a cultural heritage resource for contemporary purposes.
