ABSTRACT

Upon discussing prior trends in the study of viking activity across the Frankish realm, this initial chapter sets out the monograph’s overall aims, objectives, and spatiotemporal parameters – arguing for a thorough, cumulative reinterpretation of the available source material. It introduces the methodological underpinnings of conceptual modelling and outlines the steps taken to formulate, consolidate, and authenticate a bespoke framework of Franco–Scandinavian interaction. Finally, having characterised the scope and limitations of the interdisciplinary source material, it provides a concise consideration of the use and usefulness of specific terminology and definitions throughout this study.
