ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the influences of conservative and liberal agendas on the growth of home education. It focuses on a rich body of qualitative data to provide in-depth information about the ways in which conservative and liberal agendas influence parents’ motivation to provide home education. The chapter aims to adopt a sociological perspective and pay specific attention to examining the ways in which the liberal agenda works with regard to the decision-making process of home-schooling parents. It also focuses upon several issues, including the conservative agenda and its influence on Christian and Confucian home education, and the liberal agenda and its influences on middle-class choices regarding their children’s education. In particular, the literature grounded in empirical study and focusing on the effects of politics and social transmission on home education in the educational context of China is negligible. The chapter shows that there existed significant differences in the decision-making process between the various social fractions within Chinese middle class.
