ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a summary of the key elements of the religious education (RE)-flect approach with reference to the three metacognitive learning environment zones and the Lesson Planning Framework. Theya are: Meta-thinking zone, Worldview zone and Resources zone. The chapter explains how the principles might be adapted for use in other phases of education and/or applied across the curriculum. The meta-thinking zone was envisaged to facilitate a shift in thinking from the cognitive to the metacognitive level. The meta-thinking zone was also designed to develop three different aspects of metacognition. The first was metacognitive knowledge, which pertains to awareness of the cognitive processes by which we obtain knowledge and the conditions relating to these processes. The second aspect of metacognition to be developed by the meta-thinking zone was monitoring and control. The third aspect of metacognition to be developed by the meta-thinking zone was metacognitive experiences.
