ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 offers synopses of many academic research reports by experts in the field, which lend credence to the information provided in this manual on community collaboration, disaster mental health interventions, and trauma-informed and brain-based acute stress/post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment. Topics include psychological response in U.S. human-caused and natural disasters, the long-term impact of PTSD on mental and physical health, specific pre- and post-disaster programs required for children and youth, community resiliency, faith-based organizations, and ethical considerations in disaster research. Studies include disaster-hit communities of New York City terrorism; the Newtown/Sandy Hook, Connecticut, shooting; the Boston Marathon bombing; Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and Hurricane Sandy on the East Coast; psychosocial recovery after Oklahoma City tornadoes; Puerto Rico hurricanes; and Columbine High School in Colorado.
