ABSTRACT

This chapter will address visual learning style and the main cognitive theories which have been associated with autism and will address the following:

Theory of Mind (ToM) including the double empathy problem

Executive Functioning (EF)

Visual Learning Style

Differences in ToM and EF have been associated with a diagnosis of autism and can result in an increase in anxiety. In addition, the preference for visual learning results in anxiety in situations where there is an emphasis on verbal and social communication. This chapter will outline how this visual learning style, when facilitated, can assist in anxiety management.
