ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the processes of classification/diagnosis, assessment, and intervention. The discussion of classification and diagnosis includes an extended consideration of the DSM approach as well as a discussion of empirical approaches to classification and of the development of the NIMH Research Domain Criteria. The issue of high rates of co-occurrence of disorders is considered. In addition, the potential impact of stigmatization is highlighted and examined. The discussion of assessment emphasizes the importance of conducting comprehensive assessments and considers various approaches to the assessment process including interviews, problem checklists, self-report instruments, observational assessment, projective tests, intellectual–educational assessment, and assessment of physical functioning. Various approaches to prevention and treatment are introduced, defined, and discussed and the importance of evidence-based assessment and intervention is emphasized. The discussion of classification/diagnosis, assessment, and intervention is enriched through case material, tables, illustrations, and by highlighted discussion of topics of importance and interest.
