ABSTRACT

Some private voluntary organizations (PVOs) and the United Nations (UN)-blessed Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs) now find themselves increasingly involved with intergovernmental bodies or the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Agency for International Development and its counterparts in the sixteen other industrialized countries, and from such multilateral international agencies as UNDP. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) operates from headquarters in Paris; the UN Environmental Program has headquarters in Nairobi. Private nonprofit groups with similar national committee structures have raised funds and popular backing for UNESCO's literacy campaign, the Yaws Control Program of the World Health Organization, and Food and Agriculture Organization Freedom from Hunger campaign, which enlisted the cooperating efforts of eighty different private national NGO committees. The United Nations Commission on Refugees and the United Nations Disaster Relief Agency are two intergovernmental bodies that have turned to PVOs to take on emerging assignments to relieve acute human suffering in times of catastrophe.
