ABSTRACT

The revolution of 1959 was not the first in Cuban history, nor is it likely to be the last. Cuba has undergone several important revolutions, and the victory of Fidel Castro is viewed by some historians as the logical outcome of these unfulfilled events. All of these revolutions had a common theme: the desire to assert Cuba’s autonomy, which to date has never really been attained. Hence the revolution of 1959 is only a part of the historical trend against outside economic and political domination, namely, that imposed by Spain, the United States, and currently the Soviet Union. Today, more than ever, Cuba remains a dependency of a foreign power and in this respect the Castro revolution has been a complete failure.
