ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the most important auxiliary organizatins and instruments. The trade unions of the East European states are auxiliary organizations of the communist parties. They are officially assigned two basic tasks, which are contradictory and mutually exclusive; to help with fulfillment of the national economic plan and defend the workers’ interests. The National Fronts exist under different names in all East European countries. In fact the congresses of all auxiliary organizations in Eastern Europe are modeled on the party congress and copy its agenda and procedure. Topical propaganda campaigns of the East European regimes invariably enjoy the National Fronts’ support. The communist parties were only one of the elements composing the national fronts, although usually the most powerful one. The organizational structure of the national fronts resembles the structure of the communist party to a large degree.
