ABSTRACT

A number of non-Christian schools were founded in Calcutta and elsewhere following the success of Hindoo College. A pre-requisite for the expansion of the school system was the easy availability of text books in the writing of which the missionaries and chaplains played a leading part. British administration in general and many individual Englishmen were very supportive of English education for Indians. This chapter narrates the events that followed the establishment of Hindoo College and the nature of the new English education schools in the country.
