ABSTRACT
This chapter highlights the current state of affairs in how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is impacting radiology, recognizing that what’s happening in the medical discipline is a proxy for every specialty. A great place to start in pursuit of AI innovation is to shift the focus from whether AI will replace humans in doing a job to how it will replace humans or make humans better at performing specific tasks. The use of AI, and specifically machine learning, to consistently recognize patterns within images is one way to call attention to things that might be missed in an image. The application of AI across imaging and other systems is helping to reduce burdens on radiologists by automating processes. Radiology has always been one of the top data-driven medical specialties. Historically this has meant mastering the generation and interpretation of vast amounts of unstructured data in the form of images.
