ABSTRACT

As assessment has become technologised, assessment security has become dependent on cybersecurity. This chapter provides a primer on cybersecurity and then explores how assessment security can benefit from cybersecurity concepts and practices. Cybersecurity’s adversarial stance, one that expects some people will try to break the rules, has parallels with assessment security, and strong contrasts with academic integrity. Ways to improve assessment security through cybersecurity are proposed, including ‘penetration testing’, which involves attempting to break into a system – or cheat in an assessment. Finally, lessons from cybersecurity’s culture of vulnerability disclosure are considered with reference to the disclosure of cheating incidents and assessment security vulnerabilities.
