ABSTRACT

Gore Vidal’s hatred of America is, in its way, an impressive thing, but it has sometimes been forced to retreat in face of a greater hatred: that of the Jews. In order to retaliate the injuries he imagines to have been inflicted on him as a writer, as a foe of the Judeo-Christian ethic and religion, as a homosexual, Vidal has “learned to hate” an extraordinary number of groups and individuals. Vidal’s America is teetering on the edge of a Niagara of insanity. Vidal is old-fashioned in his Jew-hatred when he brands Judaism as “race-religion” and refers, obsessively, to virtually every Jew with whom he disagrees as “rabbi.” Vidal maintains that homosexuality and Judaism are natural allies because “homosexuality is only important when made so by irrational opponents. The psychiatrist David Reuben, whose obsession with sexual matters greatly resembles Vidal’s own except for his lack of enthusiasm for bisexuality and homosexuality, is a representative of “the rabbinical mind.”.
