ABSTRACT

To move forward, sometimes we must go back to the beginning and start again. This, perhaps, is one of those times. Amidst the backdrop of constant change, the fragilities of academia are becoming increasingly clear. Even in the midst of tumultuous and troubled times, there is always wisdom from others to be found. Others who, in fact, lived through different—yet very much related—sets of troubled and tumultuous times themselves. Others in the field who not only overcame challenges and made contributions of their own but cleared the path so that one may do the work one feel compelled to do today. The Anthropocene is serious business. This is why scholars use it as a way to signal that we may be living in an epoch in which humans not only have become a force with planetary impact, but an epoch in which humanity faces extinction alongside so many other forms of life.
