ABSTRACT

A forward-looking agenda is presented for policymakers and practitioners to make housing BPE an Integral part of the design, build and management process. Manufacturers hold the key to future BPE, by ensuring successful product use in housing. A richer BPE approach is needed, beyond life-cycle analysis, which tests building products with people in their homes and reveals how products and components work in tandem with other considerations. A surprisingly good time for developing BPE is when the housing market slows down and house builders have more time to reflect on their processes and invest for the future. Government housing agencies have supported post-occupancy evaluation activities in the past, and should always have a major role in mainstreaming BPE. Learning through the lens of BPE is vital for designers to understand that there is much more to a home than simply producing a predictive model.
