ABSTRACT

This chapter explores new directions in housing occupancy feedback, related to prototyping and action research based on the author's own experience. It discusses emerging techniques that can enhance housing BPE studies. Participant observation becomes action research when the BPE evaluator engages directly with the inhabitants and co-learns about various issues in the home through dialogue. The evaluators then explained to the inhabitants how they could improve their comfort through appropriate shading and ventilation practices based on the BPE findings, as a form of action research. The evaluator provided guidance based on BPE findings as they emerged, which was then informally disseminated via the inhabitants' Facebook group. In housing BPE, inhabitants can easily become involved as citizen scientists to augment the BPE project, and also to contribute to the definition of what should be monitored, given their experiential knowledge of their own home.
