ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a quick reference guide to support women and babies during the postnatal/neonatal period. It explains procedure for performing neonatal screening. Hearing problems are estimated to affect 1–3 in 1000 babies. It is recommended that all newborn babies are now given a hearing test prior to discharge from hospital or have the test as soon as possible when home. A capillary blood sample from the baby's heel, which tests for the level of serum bilirubin. The result is plotted on a graph and a decision made whether to use phototherapy or not. The chapter provides step-by-step processes for students to perform neonatal blood spot test.
