ABSTRACT

Not every client is open to discussing existential themes in a coaching framework. Even if existential themes are at the heart of a client’s goal or challenge, it is crucial to lay the right foundations for existential work and contract clearly the extent to which an exploration of philosophical dimensions will inform your work together. In order to introduce the process and application of the basic tenets of existential practice, the methods, models and tools described in this section – phenomenological inquiry, bracketing, using the here and now, working practically with the four worlds model, and the CREATE and MOVER models of existential coaching – in combination with your introduction of your personal style and approach, will help to grasp what existential work is about, ultimately enabling coach and client to make an informed decision on whether and how to proceed. Practical questions and exercises will help you ground theory in practice and detailed guidelines are laid out to help coaches ascertain whether they are cut out for existential work and help clients to understand what to expect from the existential coaching space.
