ABSTRACT

Mental health professionals have an ethical obligation to appreciate, understand, and learn about the multicultural backgrounds of individuals, families, couples, groups, research participants, organizations, and communities. This chapter reviews key components of ethical and multicultural practice including professional standards of practice as well as the influence of personal morals and values. This chapter will prepare readers to develop an integrated, robust, and comprehensive ethical decision-making model that incorporates diversity-related antecedents. Additionally, the strategies and tools presented will allow the reader to adopt a process to address value conflicts when they arise in treatment.
