ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how those in Generation Z see themselves making a difference in their communities, and more broadly, the world. The chapter begins with a discussion of trends in Generation Z’s civic engagement, including moving from a “me” generation to “we” generation, solving problems versus addressing symptoms and moving from activism to hacktivism. A discussion on Generation Z’s perspectives and behaviors related to forming opinions, changing hearts and minds, community leadership roles, military service, litigation, in-person and digital activism, raising and spending money, and social innovation are included. A special focus is paid to volunteerism – comparing perspectives, rates, and behaviors of Generation Z with older generations when they were coming of age.
