ABSTRACT
Creating the illusion that the background of a shot shifts rapidly behind a static character in the foreground can visualize their intense emotional and/or psychological reaction to a meaningful discovery. Choices in lighting, composition, exposure, art direction, frame rate, and music, among others, can contribute their own associated meanings to the overall effect of the technique, and directly influence how it will be interpreted by an audience. Michael Bay’s Bad Boys II , the action comedy followup to his directorial debut, Bad Boys , features a scene that combines several techniques designed to stylize the look of a pivotal moment to underline its narrative significance, including the use of a telephoto lens with a dolly arc move to make the background appear to move at a high rate of speed around static subjects in the foreground.
