ABSTRACT

This chapter presents three emerging sub-themes concerning the participants’ reflections on the implications of the current status of English for the teaching of culture(s). These sub-themes consist of (1) the participants’ preference for teaching American and British cultures, (2) their stated need for the integration of a diversity of cultures in the classroom, and (3) their suggestions about various ways to introduce other cultures to students. Even though the important role of cultures in ELT is highly acknowledged, the chapter presents differing opinions concerning the teaching of culture(s), especially in relation to which cultures should be taught. It is noted that most of the participants tend to perceive the English language as including the norms and values of Anglophone countries.
