ABSTRACT

A myth functions as a dream in the social group. It also has this function for the individual within the group. Laius represents an inner psychic reality. The murder of Laius symbolizes the murder of the infant Oedipus. The murder is undertaken as a way of trying to murder the malign child, but with the act is also a murder of the sane child. The negative, malign power is born of the assassination of a wounded child. The psychotic negativism generates a deceitful array of solutions. The climax of the corruption sets in with the murder of Laius. At those crossroads, Oedipus murdered his one hope, the one true possession he had, the seed of possibility. Such disasters have many manifestations, but they always find their source in a vile murder and a hidden malignity. The slaying of Laius is easy to see, the sleeping with Jocasta is identifiable.
