ABSTRACT

A constant conjunction is a function of consciousness in the observer. The observer feels that it is a necessity for him that the conjunction should have a meaning for him. Meaning is a function of self-love, self-hate or self-knowledge. It is not logically, but psycho-logically necessary. If narcissistic love is unsatisfied the development of love is disturbed and cannot extend to love of objects. Psycho-analysis is concerned with love as an aspect of mental development and the analyst must consider the maturity of love and “greatness” in relation to maturity. One such group of superficialities pertains to the circumstances in which analysis is conducted. These are usually physically comfortable and bear the stamp of unadventurous civilized existence. They therefore conspire against awareness that analysand and analyst are engaged on a venture which is as hazardous as activities in which the perils are more obvious and dramatic.
