ABSTRACT

This brief chapter lists some of the difficulties facing the psychoanalyst attempting to understand her patients’ “inner world,” intrapsychic conflicts, memories, and fantasies in today’s “outside world.” The tranquility and stability of daily life today is threatened by the possibility of a nuclear attack, a terrorist attack, racism, homophobia, school shootings, sexual harassment, and even climate change. In addition, changes in the psychoanalytic world in theory and technique, e.g., the use of screens can be further sources of de-stabilization. All times have had their social, political, and economic issues. These are the issues of this particular moment in time.
