ABSTRACT

The relationship of gay men to the men's movement is unique in several respects. Gay men's struggles, like the struggles of black men, are intimately connected to a struggle for liberation and security from oppression. Gay political struggles with conservative organizations might be expected, but on the Left many gay men had to create their own radical vision because they were marginalized within North American leftist organizations. The emerging profeminist men's movement of the mid- to late 1970s appealed to many of these gay men. Gay men also have an ongoing involvement with the men's rights perspective; yet the gay liberation agenda has not gained a foothold within this perspective. Gay men who do not exercise that sexual power can be masculine; their masculinity is often formed without it. The relationship of gay men and gay male organizations to feminism is difficult to determine.
