ABSTRACT

The PhD journey may be smooth for some, but is mostly full of ups and downs for others. Academic productivity is important, but general well-being is even more critical. Achieving and maintaining well-being play a significant role in the pathways to achieving and maintaining academic productivity and PhD satisfaction. To depict the complicated PhD journey, this chapter focuses on an important aspect of the PhD training process that is of concern to international PhD students, especially Asian students in TESOL—that is, their well-being. After investigating different factors affecting their well-being through relating and analysing reported incidents, the chapter provides insight into potential support strategies and some implications for the effective supervision of prospective international PhD students.
