ABSTRACT

Causation is an inter-component Tier 2 Method (T2M) used to identify whether the state of a starting point’s component can be redesigned so that it depends on the state of another component or an external factor (such as temperature), thus introducing a causal relationship between two or more components (or between a component and an external factor), or modifying an existing causal relationship. This chapter discusses 7 T3Ms organized based on the corresponding search paths into three categories. The first category focus on redesigning one or more components of a solution such that its state will change automatically based on the state of another component. The second category focus on redesigning one or more components of a solution such that its state will change automatically based on user characteristics. The third category focus on redesigning one or more components of a solution such that its state will automatically change based on third-party factors.
