ABSTRACT
In spite of the colonial framework, Pumwani became a place of its own with clear connections to the Muslim and Swahili practices of the old settlements, where most of Pumwani’s residents hailed from. This chapter looks at how people organised and lived their lives within the controlling framework of the colonisers – what social practices this necessitated – and how they created their own urban cultural and social spaces.
